A dental crown is a covering for a broken or decayed tooth, when too much of the original tooth is missing or if the tooth is in a high stress area of the mouth. An example of the latter is when you chip your front teeth. While a filling may be a temporary or short-term solution, crowning your front teeth in this scenario will be a long-term solution.
Crowning a tooth can improve its appearance and will strengthen it, allowing it to last longer. It can be made from porcelain, ceramic, glass or metal. Crowns can also be used to hold a bridge or denture in place.
Our dentist will prepare the tooth for crowning by removing a layer of its outer surface and taking a mold. When the tooth is crowned, the look, shape and thickness matches the original tooth.
Our dentists will make a temporary crown until the permanent crown is ready. The permanent crown is fitted using cement of adhesive. Crowns are cleaned and looked after like your existing teeth.
